Salmon is an easy fish to cook, with a distinctive flavour that almost everyone enjoys.

There are a number of quick and easy recipes available, such as the Baked Salmon Recipe.

Aside from this, one should keep in mind the general rules about cooking fish. These are described in some detail in How to Cook Fish, but in brief they are:

  • Watch the recipe cooking time carefully, so that you do not accidentally overcook. The difference between an OK fish and a terrific-tasting fish is making sure that you don't overcook. This is the single most common error when cooking fish.
  • Make sure the fish doesn't dry out. If you are frying the fish, this is usually not a problem. However, if you bake, grill or barbeque fish you need to protect it. Common ways to protect fish from drying out are to cover it, wrap it in foil, or cook it in a sauce.
  • Don't overspice. Strong spices tend to overwhelm the taste of the fish, with the result that one tastes the spices but not the fish.

Having said that, there are a few differences between cooking Salmon and cooking other fish. To begin with, Salmon is in fact easier to cook than many other fish. This is due to several reasons:

  • It has a higher oil content than certain other fish (e.g. trout) so it is less likely to dry out.
  • It has a relatively strong and distinctive taste so it is less likely to be dominated by spices. Consequently, one can get away with using moderately strong-tasting ingredients and still enjoy the taste of the salmon itself.
  • Almost everyone likes the taste of salmon, something which cannot be said of many fish. For example, many people find delicate tasting fish (such as trout) bland, while others dislike very strong tasting fish (such as mackerel). Salmon falls in between these two extremes, and consequently is enjoyed by almost everyone (except those who just don't like fish at all).
  • Salmon is considered an exotic dish, and consequently makes a good impression in itself.
  • There are a large number of good recipes for Salmon.
